iPhone and iPod Touch

December 15, 2009 - At last, we are finally able to announce the first MaxQData racing products available for iPhone and iPod Touch.

Many customers have asked for iPhone support.  What most don't realize is that the iPhone has a few crucial shortcomings:

- You cannot connect standard Bluetooth-enabled GPS modules to an iPhone (iPhone has Bluetooth, but it denies access to Bluetooth GPS devices that are not specifically designed to work with iPhone).

- The internal iPhone GPS may be OK for everyday navigation, but it works poorly for automobile racing applications, at least according to our testing.  We have documented accuracy problems and long data dropouts once the car reaches high speeds and high lateral accelerations.  We haven't found a way to correct for these problems by using the internal accelerometers while still achieving the level of accuracy people have come to expect from MaxQData products.

We've solved these problems with new hardware and software to provide the most advanced racing data acquisition solution on the market for iPhone and iPod Touch.

Hardware

We have completely reengineered our flagship Quantum module so that it uses WiFi instead of Bluetooth, enabling it to talk to applications on the iPhone and iPod Touch.  We have also released our lower-cost Quantum Dot module with WiFi.  The Quantum Dot, combined with an inexpensive 8GB iPod Touch, is a great value.

Software

Our main application is the MaxQData iPhone software.  This software includes real-time display of captured data and provides data analysis directly on the iPhone/iPod Touch, including features for both road racers and autocrossers.  For current MaxQData users, this application corresponds to the "Flight" and "Chart" applications running under Windows Mobile, with a simplified (and much sexier!) user interface.

If all you need is a lap timer, check out CMS Lap Timer, a road racing lap time display for both iPhone and iPod Touch.  It has the ability to record lap times and optionally Tweet them to your choice of recipients.  You can use it on an iPhone with its built-in GPS, but for accuracy and reliability you will want to use it with either our Quantum or Quantum Dot.  CMS Lap Timer is produced by MaxQData and marketed in conjunction with our friends at Cantrell Motorsports.
